The idea of “open source” has transformed the world of software (e.g. Linux, Google Office) and information (e.g. Wikipedia). Now it’s time to transform the world in a very tangible way with open source hardware, where the rubber hits the road.
I learned about this on NPR’s TED Radio Hour episode called The Power of Crowds. Very much worth a listen.
From the NPR page:
Marcin Jakubowski believes that the only way to achieve abundance for all is by opening the means of production. Through this, he says, “We can lead self-sustaining lives without sacrificing our standard of living.”
Though he has a Ph.D. in fusion physics, Jakubowski chose a life as a farmer and social innovator. He is the founder of Open Source Ecology, which is creating the Global Village Construction Set. He’s putting these ideas to the test at Factor e Farm in rural Missouri.
Well Mr. McGough I’m very disheartened to hear about your transformation from being a Christian into not. I read a comment you had written about you running into Christians who didn’t find your work acceptable our even a remarkable discovery. I run into the same thing in my house with my family. They are believers in Christ but when I speak its like they are above what I have to say sometimes. I gave my life to Christ two years ago and I started out as an atheist. It’s strange to me to see the reverse effect. My family are good people but I believe that they live in a society of believers that say its okay to live in sin and God will be okay with that because we are only humans right? I understand where you are coming from on different levels I used to be atheist and to watch and speak to my family was off putting to say the least. I mean what really is the difference between them and me. They just go to church. I was angry at them for believing something as ridiculous as something or someone controlling the universe or them, that was until I gave my life over to God and put the will of God before my own. Now I’m upset at the fact of what they have our think they have and they aren’t any different then how I used to be when I didn’t believe in Jesus. See the problem was never with you or your work because it shows me that God is divine and if He can make a monarch butterfly hem themselves in with a golden stitch then He can do exactly what you proved in your wheel. The problem is with people they want the security of living a good life and going to heaven, but what they fail to realize is that God created us to love, they just use religion to justify their meanness. Does that make them a Christian? Jesus said you will know them by their fruits, and one day he will say to many away from me I never knew you. Sir I love Jesus because of so many reasons but the number one reason is because I never knew what love was until He showed me. I’m not trying to win your soul for Jesus or convert you I’m just here to say sorry for people in this world that use Jesus as a way to bash others. God bless.
