The number 42 also points to the second coming of the Messiah/Christ. The 42nd verse in the second last chapter of the Gospel according to Luke mentions this coming

And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom Lk.23:42

This occurence is related to judgment and death.

The judgment of the people of Israel (for killing the Messiah) is symbolically announced by two events in the Old Covenant in which 42 people were killed in each case

And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. 2 Kings 2:24

Jehu met with the brethren of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, Who are ye? And they answered, We are the brethren of Ahaziah; and we go down to salute the children of the king and the children of the queen. And he said, Take them alive. And they took them alive, and slew them at the pit of the shearing house, even two and forty men; neither left he any of them. 2 Kings 10,13-14

In the first case, it was the youngest (lowest) people who could distinguish good from evil. In the second case, they were (highly placed) people of royal lineage.

The connection of the number 42 with judgment and death is reflected in the Old Covenant in the number of cities that were added to the 6 cities of refuge

And among the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites there shall be six cities for refuge, which ye shall appoint for the manslayer, that he may flee thither: and to them ye shall add forty and two cities. Num.35:6

In Ezra the number of the sons of Azmaveth 42 is mentioned

The children of Azmaveth, forty and two. Ezra 2:24

    Azmaveth means strong is death.

The factor pair 2*21 is found in an interesting relationship between Christ, David and the number 14 in Revelation

I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. Rev.22:16

Twice David (total value 21 according to the Textus Receptus) is mentioned there (as root and lineage or scion)

    2*21 = 42

The number 42 in the book of Revelation has a double meaning. On the one hand, it promises the return of the Messiah/Christ to the earth. Thus it is a number of joy, as it is at the beginning of the renewed Covenant. On the other hand, it is also the number that announces the terrors of the great tribulation that lie before the second coming of the Lord. The first two verses of Revelation form its introduction and summary. The book of Revelation is the Revelation of Jesus Christ shown to the disciple John as a witness. The first two verses consist of 42 words. The number 42 occurs in the renewed Covenant only in Revelation.

After 42 months of great tribulation, Christ will come in glory.

The number 42 occurs 7 times directly in the Bible:

    Num.35:6; 2 Kings 2:24 .10:14; Ezra 2:24; Neh.7:28; Rev.11:2 .13,5

The 7 verses with the word forty-two all have to do with death. The relationship of the number 42 to death provides the explanation for why the Son of G-d had to come to earth as a man. He had to break the power of the devil by his death

Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; Hebr.2:14
