How many Brains does a Human Being Have?

Recently read an article about some work done by a Biologist in the 1950's showing that Humans indeed have 3 very distinct Brains. The Oldest and most Primal Brain he calls the "Reptile Brain" which controls our heartbeat, and respiration, as well as instincts for survival, such as, food, sex, aggression, self-maintenance etc.... The main purpose of this Brain is merely to advocate for and serve the owners/slaves DNA code. This Brain has no sense of time or Memory but only exists in the NOW.

The Next Brain to develop was the Mid-Brain... or the emotional Brain(Limbic System). This was a fairly decent upgrade/add-on to the Reptile Brain since it add the pleasure reward and pain avoidance mechanisms through that wonderful thing we call memory. This Brain it would seem can understand the Past, experience the Now, but is not so adapt at visualizing or predicting the future. This Emotional Brain is still very much a slave to the lower Reptilian Brain.

Lastly we have the Frontal Lobes and the Neocortical Brain. WOW what an Amazing Brain.....The neocortex is made up of six layers, labelled from the outer in, I to VI. In humans, the neocortex is involved in higher functions such as sensory perception, generation of motor commands, spatial reasoning, conscious thought and language.

Perhaps the most fascinating aspect is when it comes to survival instincts like Safety, Food, Sex, Aggression, the Reptile Brain will Kick the Neocortex Offline allowing you to "DO" without "Thinking." I know i have experienced this a few times in my life and found it to be a very Unpleasant sensation, the feeling of no longer being in control of my actions. SO yes this can be both a "blessing' and a "curse". I tend to think it is probably more of curse to most human beings in modern times. Road Rage, Crimes of Passion, Anxiety, Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior etc etc... all seem to be this process unveiled. The latest research shows that through diligent practice and conscious thought that Human beings can gradually reprogram their brains to resist this take over of our higher minds, allowing for more decisions to be made on logical thought rather than lower level emotions or instincts. It also allows a person to control their emotions to "work" for them when they can be controlled rather than being slaves to those emotions.

Here are some tactics that can strengthen your Conscious Brain from take over by your Instinctual Brain and/or emotions.

    1- Postpone Pleasurable Activities
2- Consciously use Pleasure and Pain
    3- Delay your Actions
    4- Think of a Reason
    5- Journal your Thoughts

If you would like to read the more in-depth article that i have paraphrased here.....

P.S. Another link i found quite enlightening that details The importance of beliefs and of examining them

People who refuse reality ultimately leave themselves powerless to change it.

As long as you believe something is impossible for you, then you are right!!!

The bottom line is that we would do well to be Lovers of Truth....

The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (2 Thessalonians 2:9–12—NKJV)

Are the three brains supposed to have evolved in the order given or the fact that there are three interdependent parts of the brain? What was first referred to as the "snake brain" is that part that controls the autonomous functions of the body, some of which you listed.

Jesus is the greatest example of all, of being in control over other parts of the mind. Temptation takes place in the mind. Temptation can begin with an external influence. We saw how Jesus overcame temptation. Whilst not immune from temptation, Jesus was able to overcome it. The main aim of Jesus was not to do his own will. That goes to show (as in other examples) what the mind is capable of doing. Hence the need to focus the mind and concentrate the mind on the task.

I will add a PS by way of mentioning another mental/brain phenomena/condition talked about in the book by L Ron Hubbard on Scientology. The author talks about 'Mental Aberration' He gives an explanation why some people seem to go "crazy" and act our of character at times. One has to read his book to appreciate this subject, but I will draw attention to a comment he made how that mental aberration can be suppressed by having a strong faith. That brings up the subject of faith, whether that faith is in God or whatever. Faith is a powerful process within the mind.

    All the best
