The Oldest and most Primal Brain he calls the "Reptile Brain" which controls our heartbeat, and respiration, as well as instincts for survival, such as, food, sex, aggression, self-maintenance etc.... The main purpose of this Brain is merely to advocate for and serve the owners/slaves DNA code. This Brain has no sense of time or Memory but only exists in the NOW.
The Next Brain to develop was the Mid-Brain... or the emotional Brain(Limbic System). This was a fairly decent upgrade/add-on to the Reptile Brain since it add the pleasure reward and pain avoidance mechanisms through that wonderful thing we call memory. This Brain it would seem can understand the Past, experience the Now, but is not so adapt at visualizing or predicting the future. This Emotional Brain is still very much a slave to the lower Reptilian Brain.
Lastly we have the Frontal Lobes and the Neocortical Brain. WOW what an Amazing Brain.....The neocortex is made up of six layers, labelled from the outer in, I to VI. In humans, the neocortex is involved in higher functions such as sensory perception, generation of motor commands, spatial reasoning, conscious thought and language.
Perhaps the most fascinating aspect is when it comes to survival instincts like Safety, Food, Sex, Aggression, the Reptile Brain will Kick the Neocortex Offline allowing you to "DO" without "Thinking." I know i have experienced this a few times in my life and found it to be a very Unpleasant sensation, the feeling of no longer being in control of my actions. SO yes this can be both a "blessing' and a "curse". I tend to think it is probably more of curse to most human beings in modern times. Road Rage, Crimes of Passion, Anxiety, Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior etc etc... all seem to be this process unveiled. The latest research shows that through diligent practice and conscious thought that Human beings can gradually reprogram their brains to resist this take over of our higher minds, allowing for more decisions to be made on logical thought rather than lower level emotions or instincts. It also allows a person to control their emotions to "work" for them when they can be controlled rather than being slaves to those emotions.
