A Woman's Integrity (http://godandbutterfly.net/2013/01/12/a-womans-integrity/)

Women’s bodies are not a commodity as many patriarchal societies believe, and no man has a right to violate the integrity of her body in any way. Throughout history the value of a woman has been placed upon her sexual purity and it is when men violate her integrity that she becomes devalued. There is no such devaluation for a man, because it is men who have set the standard of a woman’s worth and it is men who created the division of inequality between the genders. The Bible clearly reinforces this practice of division between male and female in all areas of life which reveals its human origins. What starts out in the second chapter of Genesis with male and female being as “one flesh” quickly devolves into the woman being ruled over by the man and becoming his possession, thus setting clear lines of division between the genders and making certain natural functions of a woman’s body considered unclean and shameful. Even in the New Testament Jesus makes it clear to his audience that the best condition for man is to be unmarried (separated from the woman), as does the apostle Paul who confirms the sentiment that it is only good to marry if one cannot contain their sexual desires, but the best way is to remain unmarried as he is. This does nothing but exacerbate the already existing division between male and female, which is also contrary to the idea of unity put forth in Genesis 2.

Matt.19:10-12 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

1 Cor.7:8-9 I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.

Even though the idea of division of the genders did not originate in the Bible, its teaching clearly reinforces the male viewpoint of different standards of value for men and women. A woman’s value is judged on what she is worth to a man, thus robbing her of her own identity and integral value; whereas a man’s value is judged solely on the standard of men and his integrity remains intact. If anyone has any doubt as to the origins of male centered, biblical thought, it can quickly be put to rest; every patriarchal society in the history of humankind is structured on a male dominated order. Patriarchal systems were well underway before the Hebrews became a people worshiping one god and have continued on through history until today. This being the case it is easy to see the progression of male domination of women being incorporated into the male mindset that dressed the god of the Bible in his masculine garments. The erroneous idea that the Bible teaches unity is held by most Christians who are unaware that just beneath the seemingly peaceful, unified surface lies a tempest of division. Not only is there division amongst the genders, but division amongst races is also rampant. The only respite from this overflowing abundance of division, is the unity of salvation found in Christ, which applies to the male and female of all races on earth; meaning that every human on the planet can be saved according to the Bible if they believe that Jesus is the son of god. Galatians contains the only verse in the Bible that specifically includes male and female as part of the universality of salvation.

Gal.3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

These verses of unification with god through salvation have nothing to do with the lack of fleshly equality amongst genders, which is reinforced by all the New Testament writers. Rules, laws and obedience are the hallmarks of Scripture, which masquerade under the guise of freedom espoused by Jesus and his apostles. There can be no true freedom when one is subjugated to the rule of another because of their gender, neither is there any freedom when one is threatened with hell if you don’t conform to a specific set of doctrines. It’s time for women to rise up and demand their equal place alongside men, and fathers to begin teaching their sons to view women as their equals.
