This seems pretty significant. From the Huffpo:

Majority Of Americans Would Vote For An Atheist For President

(RNS) For the second time in less than a year, the Gallup poll reports that a majority of Americans would vote for an atheist for president.

The latest survey, from June, found that 54 percent of those asked said they would vote a "well- qualified" atheist into the Oval Office -- the highest percentage since Gallup began asking the question in 1958, when only 18 percent said they would back a nonbeliever.

On the other hand, the survey showed that those who do not believe in God still come in behind every other group polled for, including gays and lesbians (68 percent) and Muslims (58 percent).

Still, an imaginary atheist candidate passed the 50 percent threshold for the first time when Gallup asked the question in August 2011, so the trend is upward.

I find it fascinating that gays and lesbians fair better than atheists. It just goes to show what religious indoctrination does to people. What do religious folks think when they here the word "atheist"? From their response, it seems something like this:

Or this:

Whereas the reality is more like this brilliant scientist Carl Sagan with his mind in the heavens:

And here he's shielding the candle of intelligence, knowledge, science, and truth from the wind of ignorance and mindless prejudice:

I found this pic on the pro-cannabis site www.tokeofthetown.com where it had this quote (http://www.tokeofthetown.com/2011/06/cannabis_quote_of_the_day_carl_sagan.php) from Carl:

"I am convinced that there are genuine and valid levels of perception available with cannabis (and probably with other drugs) which are, through the defects of our society and our educational system, unavailable to us without such drugs." ~ Carl Sagan

These issues are all related. Atheism is merely an intelligent response to the ten thousand false assertions made by religious charlatans (often in pointy hats and funny dresses) who are out to oppress people into submission so they can take their money and rule over them. The high crime of all religious institutions is the dreaded QUESTIONING OF AUTHORITY and that's why they are so adamantly opposed to cannabis because it opens the mind and reveals self to self. If the population gets in touch with their true feelings, they will no longer submit to the rulers.
