Peleg was one of son of Eber, descendant of Shem (Genesis 10: 25). The word Peleg means "divided". BTW it also sounds like English "break". But what was divided? Was it that the people at the time of Peleg was the time when:
1. the single language was mixed up (divided) by God?
2. the people were then divided by their languages and scattered?
3. the continents that were once joined together as one continent of Pangea were then separated and drifted apart?

I believed it was all 3. The reasons were when God mixed up the single language, the people then grouped themselves according to their language group and scattered. God assisted the scattering faster and making re-grouping difficult by drifting the continents so that some landed in Europe, some in Africa, some in sub-continent of India, some in Asia and some even to the Americas.

Ignore the million of years!.... Utter rubbish!

Many Blessings to all.

The reason why I believe that the continental drifts have added effects on the scattering to the people of Babel during Peleg's time is that based on the pace of scattering on their own, it may take centuries to reach their intended destinations at the far reaches of the earth, taking into consideration the topography, the climate, the large number of people, animals, properties and other logistics. If Moses and his people took 40 years in the Sinai desert to reach their destination, what more of the people in Peleg's time? Such ample time in the migration may provide opportunities for people to change their mind to u-turn from their migration and re-group back in Babel.

The continental drift concept will assist in the migration and dispersion with no way of u-turning or re-grouping. After migrating for several miles and for a few days, they may find themselves suddenly and perhaps overnight, thousand of miles from Babel separated by hugh stretch of waters, harsh landscapes and high mountain ranges. The continental drifts also helped in dispersing and separating different species of animals far to their intended destinations much faster.

Many blessings to all.

Just as cells divide I think the earth was literally divided - a "cell" division if you will

Hi derekye,

Cell division is known as mitosis; one cell is divided into two and the two cells are divided into two thus making four cells and so on. I don't think this is meant by Peleg which comes from the hebrew word Palag which means channels, streams, rivers, earthquake. This suggests that the earth was divided by channels of water accompanied by earthquakes. Breaking of continents were expected to create channels of ocean water which gradually widen to create oceans and seas. Such tectonic movements were expected to create many major earthquakes and tsunamis:

In the Hebrew language the word 'Peleg ' means a dividing by a "small channel of water" and is also root associated with the meaning of an earthquake. The Hebrew word used as 'divided' in the passage means to "split" something. According to the genealogy (Genesis 11:10-17), this man named Peleg was born 101 years after the flood. No doubt this Peleg was so named because of an event of great significance to the people living at the time he was born.

Many Blessings to you.
