    The Rod of Iron

I want to present an interesting fact on how the theme of the "rod of iron" appears in Scripture. It is a theme that first appears in Book 19, in the great Messianic prophecy of God's Son as King:

Psalm 2:9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

So the first mention of Christ's Rod of Iron in Scripture is in Book 19, Chapter 2.

Where else does this theme appear in Scripture? In only one more book, Revelation:
Revelation 2:26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
Revelation 2:27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
This verse is a direct quote of Psalm 2! There is therefore a link between Psalm 2 and Revelation 2. This has been documented in more detail in the article Rev 2 - The New Name, Rod of Iron.

Now I want to point out to something more. The "rod of iron" appears elsewhere in Revelation. You can find it in Revelation 19!
Revelation 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
So the Rod of Iron that debuts in Book 19, Chapter 2 also appears in Revelation 2 and Revelation 19!

The Scriptural appearances of Christ's symbol of authority over the nations seem to be carefully allocated in Scripture! This sounds pretty much like the appearances of the theme of the potter's vessel being broken that is found in the same seminal context of Psalm 2:9. See the thread Jeremiah 19 and Psalm 2 (2:19 and 19:2).

But there is one more gem to share. The Rod of Iron appears a third time in Revelation, a mention that I deliberately skipped. The interesting thing is where it appears. If we measure the distance between the other two, Revelation 2:27 and 19:15, we'll find that the remaining occurrence appears in the almost exact center between these two verses! It is off by merely eight verses.
Revelation 12:5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
So we have three occurences of "rod of iron" in Revelation and they appear once in Revelation 2, once Revelation 19 and once halfway through Revelation 2 and 19!

Their positions in the text seem to be by design of the Book's Author!

As I was looking at Rev. 19 on the theme of "the Rod of Iron", I remembered an amazing link to Jer. 19:
Jer.19:7-8 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that seek their lives: and their carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth. And I will make this city desolate, and an hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof.

Rev. 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God....17) And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great......21)And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.
Both Jer. and Rev. use identical language in speaking of the desolation of Jerusalem.....not only in terms of their falling by the sword, but also describing the fowls of heaven who will eat their flesh!

Come to think of it if you look at the 12th book which has a few things in common:
    2Kings 11, 12
There's Athaliah's reign who, after her disappointment that her son was killed, decided to wipe out the royal seed. But the only one that was hidden in the temple was (off the top of my head) Joash. This runs parallel to Revelation 12.

So you have Jeremiah 19 (2:19) then Psalm 2 (19:2) that run parallel with Revelation 2 and 19. So now you have 2Kings 11, 12 (12:11,12) with Revelation 12.

Spoke 19: Flesh in Book 19, Jeremiah 19 and Revelation 19

And guess where in Scripture is the first mention of the "fowls of the heaven" feeding on human flesh? Book 19!
Psalm 79:2 The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.
There is a reversal within the same theme: first, the flesh of the saints is eaten. In Jeremiah 19 and Revelation 19, the flesh of the wicked is.

Curiously, this link between Psalms and Jeremiah/Revelation 19 is made possible by word choice in translation. The first mention of people's flesh being eaten by the "fowls of the heaven" is found in 1 Samuel 17:44, but the phrase there is translated in the KJV as "fowls of the air". The same Hebrew word is used (shamayim; heaven, air, sky), but translation differs.

This little detail makes all the difference, thus aligning Book 19, Jeremiah 19 and Revelation 19.

The 19th Letter has the symbolic meaning of "flesh" because one of the literal meanings of Quph is Ape/Monkey. This links to the maximization of the distribution of the word flesh in Job 19, Jeremiah 19, Matthew 19 and Revelation 19.

Spoke 12: plots to kill the Davidic King (2 Kings and Revelation 12)

Brilliant! That is a link between Book 12 and Revelation 12!!

In the two accounts, there is a number of things in common, but with a reversal of roles:
    • In both stories we have a plot to kill an infant who is the Davidic King;
    • We also have two sides in the conflict. In 2 Kings one side is made of an army led by the high priest. They are described in terms of "third parts" that take turns to protect the king. In Revelation 12, there is a "third part" of the army of the "stars of heaven" led by Satan who wants to kill the king.
    • In 2 Kings the other side of the conflict is the queen-mother Athaliah who wants to kill the king so she can rule over the kingdom herself. In Revelation 12 there is the queen-mother (she wears a "crown of twelve stars") who is pro-life and wants to give birth to her Child so He can reign.
    • The wicked side suffers loss. Athaliah is killed and Satan is cast out of heaven.
    • Finally, in both stories the king is saved and reigns by sitting upon the "throne of the Lord".
So in one account the queen-mother is on the side of evil and on the other the queen-mother is on the good side. And the same inversion occurs in the other camp.

What a powerful link in the pages of Scripture now illuminated by its own structure!

    Hitchcocks’s Dictionary of Bible Names
The name “Sur” means that withdraws or departs; rebellion
The name “Jehoash” means fire of the Lord
The name “Athaliah” means the time of the Lord
The name “Jehoiada” means knowledge of the Lord
The name “Joram” means to cast; elevated
The name “Jehosheba” means fullness, or oath, of the Lord
The name “Ahaziah” means seizure; vision of the Lord

Just as Athaliah was not slain in the House of the Lord could it be the same reason why the Dragon wasn't slain in heaven and cast down to the earth instead?
    Looking for:
third part + crown + seed
    2 Kings 11
1 And when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the seed royal.
2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king's sons which were slain; and they hid him, even him and his nurse, in the bedchamber from Athaliah, so that he was not slain.
3 And he was with her hid in the house of the LORD six years. And Athaliah did reign over the land.
4 And the seventh year Jehoiada sent and fetched the rulers over hundreds, with the captains and the guard, and brought them to him into the house of the LORD, and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the house of the LORD, and showed them the king's son.
    5 And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king's house;
6 And a third part shall be at the gate of Sur; and a third part at the gate behind the guard: so shall ye keep the watch of the house, that it be not broken down.
7 And two parts of all you that go forth on the sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of the LORD about the king.
8 And ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand: and he that cometh within the ranges, let him be slain: and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in.
9 And the captains over the hundreds did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that should go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.
10 And to the captains over hundreds did the priest give king David's spears and shields, that were in the temple of the LORD.
11 And the guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple, along by the altar and the temple.
12 And he brought forth the king's son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, God save the king.
13 And when Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people into the temple of the LORD.
14 And when she looked, behold, the king stood by a pillar, as the manner was, and the princes and the trumpeters by the king, and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets: and Athaliah rent her clothes, and cried, Treason, Treason.
15 But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD.
16 And they laid hands on her; and she went by the way by the which the horses came into the king's house: and there was she slain.
17 And Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, that they should be the LORD's people; between the king also and the people.
18 And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and brake it down; his altars and his images brake they in pieces thoroughly, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of the LORD.
19 And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of the LORD, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king's house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.
20 And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was in quiet: and they slew Athaliah with the sword beside the king's house.
21 Seven years old was Jehoash when he began to reign.
    Revelation 12
1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Then there is the royal seed in 2 Kings and the remnant seed of the woman which keep the commandments of God whom the Dragon and Athaliah were after.

Yesterday I had the same thought! The punishment on the Dragon does not take place in the heavenly courts. He was removed from heaven before his destruction just as Athaliah was removed from the earthly temple before she was executed.

I hadn't noticed that! So we have the common word "seed" uniting 2 Kings and Revelation 12. Amazing!

We thus have two more elements that strenghten the link.

I wonder whether the human author of Revelation noticed that the scene in Chapter 12 had so many elements in common with the Book of the Kings. We know that he consciously made many allusions to the OT, but this one is so subtle that maybe it was unintentional. This is the revelation of the Bible when integrated as a whole by means of its structure.
