New Features introduced with vBulletin 4.1.7

Well, that was a busy three days! It's really easy to install a "generic" version of vBulletin, but it's a lot of work to customize it.

The new vBulletin 4.1.7 is a very mature product. It has so many new features. For example, while typing this message I saw the autosave feature alert me that my draft had beed saved. This means that if my browser crashes or my cat walks on my keyboard and erases everything I wrote, I can get it back and it won't be lost. That has been a huge frustration for lots of folks in many forums all over the internet. It's a great new feature.

And now we can embed videos!



Just click on the "Insert Video" icon up there next to the "Insert Image" icon.

Oh, and this new comment box I'm typing is is a lot better than previous verions.

Well, that's it. Gotta get this posted. I need to browse around the site to ensure everything is working properly. Please send me a PM if you see any anomalies, or if you have suggestions for features you'd like to see added. And on that note, the link to the Bible Database is due to a request by Kathryn. So speak up if you want any features added to this site! I'd love to provide any service I can.

This is a great new feature. How many times have you accidentally closed your browser or navigated away and lost your post? We now have two safeguards against that. First, there is the autosave, and second there is the confirmation dialog. To see it in action, begin typing a message and then hit the back arrow on your browser. I just did it. It works great. And I just saw the autosave notification. Of course, that shows how slowling I'm typing. Part of the reason is that I've been coding for three days non-stop and that wears out a 52 year old brain, but the other reason is these sentences are rather long and it would take a speed typist half a year just to keep up without the autosave going off for the third time in this one post! Uh ... well ... you know what I mean!

The comment box (in which I am writing this post), does not have the kinds of IE 9 bugs that I saw in the 3.8.6 version.

It aslo has super^script and sub_script! A mathematicians dream! And Physicists love it too!

Wow! I can finally type it in my own forum! Will wonders never cease?

The autosave just notified me ...

Here's a bug I need to fix today. The "indent" code does not work properly. It doesn't put any space before or after the indented text:

This is some text before the indent.

This is some indented text.

This is some text after the indent.

And if you add your own spaces before and after, the software usually removes them for you! How nice ...

So don't panic - the Forum Mechanic is on the job.

Here's a great new feature of the comment edit box, called CKEditor:

out	our	stuff
in	tables

Just click the Table icon on the bottom left of the icon list in the editor.

Here's a bug I need to fix today. The "indent" code does not work properly. It doesn't put any space before or after the indented text:

This is some text after the indent.

And if you add your own spaces before and after, the software usually removes them for you! How nice ...

So don't panic - the Forum Mechanic is on the job.

I did a little hack to fix the indent problem. I styled the div tag so it has a top and bottom margin of 15px if it is found in the post content section. Now it works.

Hi Richard...thanks for putting in that link to the database. I was wondering...I just tried it, thinking it would solve the problem of having to leave the post I'm working on to get a link. I wrote half of my post, went to get the link and my post was gone. Could you tell me how to do this properly? Thank you!

Hey there Kathryn,

Are you sure your post was gone? I set it up so that when you click the link it is supposed to open in a new tab (or window). Maybe your post was still there on another tab?

What browser are you using? If it's not too old, it should have "tabs" across the top so you can have many different pages open at the same time.

In any case, if you ever lose your post, you don't need to start over because if you go back and click "reply" again, you will see a link in the lower left corner of the Editor (the box you type your comment in) that says "Restore Auto-Saved Content." Click that, and your previous post will reappear! I used this feature today. It's really cool.

Hi Richard,

I tried to click on "tables," "rows" and "columns" at several different times. None of them work. Any suggestions? All other icons seem to work okay.

What browser are you using? There are some known issues with the new comment editor and various browsers.

vBulletin just released anothe update that is supposed to fix some of the bugs. Man, just moderating and maintaining a forum sure can become a fulf time job!
