On Jan. 26th between 0100 UT and 0600 UT, a sequence of C-class magnetic eruptions around the active region hurled a bright coronal mass ejection over the sun's north pole, shown here in a coronagraph image from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory:

The cloud is not heading toward Earth, at least not directly. This and future eruptions from AR1402 are unlikely to be geoeffective as the sunspot is turning away from our planet. By week's end it will be on the far side of the sun, blasting its CMEs toward planets on the opposite side of the solar system. [spaceweather]

If this week's raging solar storm was any indication, the sun is ramping up its activity — and scientists will be ready for it. By meticulously studying our planet's star, they are able to predict these potentially dangerous space weather events better than ever before.

A huge solar flare erupted Monday, triggering the strongest radiation storm in nearly a decade. A wave of charged particles, called a coronal mass ejection (CME), bombarded Earth Tuesday. The bombardment is over now, but some minor disruptions to spacecraft and power grids were reported.

Scientists' forecast for the arrival of the disruptive wave was off by only 13 minutes, far more accurate than in the past. And with much of the world's networks interconnected and populations increasingly reliant on technology, the ability to predict and track potentially harmful space weather events will become ever more crucial. I feel sad seeing all these disasters and major events and I never go laughing at these disasters hysterically like this It's rather insensitive, inconsiderate and uncompassionate. "A boat accident is not any kind of indicator of any danger to the general public." so is a small fire but if abused or went unchecked will result in a huge inferno. That Costa boat incident is probably a result of human negligence, what will happen if human negligence or stupidity continues to flourish and go unchecked at the expense of human lives and sufferrings?

Solar Flares have never been proven to cause global warming. I am not sure where you got this idea from. It is the burning of fossil fuel and human population growth that is causing global warming.

The 6.8-magnitude quake hit a narrow strait between the heavily populated island provinces of Negros and Cebu around lunchtime on Monday with more than 200 aftershocks, some nearly as strong, causing further panic throughout the day.

A total of 43 people were reported killed, but government officials warned the death toll may rise, with dozens of people said to be injured or missing and roads to mountainous areas impassable because of the landslides.

It finally got really cold in Europe. Rome and the Netherlands recorded the lowest temperatures in 27 years and kids were making snowmen outside the Vatican. But the sudden arctic freezing last week in Ukraine, Hungary, and the Balkan states that steadily crept up the continent also took a toll, with 131 reported dead in Ukraine alone.

Winter usually arrives earlier in Europe than the United States, accompanied by piles of snow and ice, wind, and low temperatures. But 'winter' as a story this season had been delayed here for lack of an appearance. Recent bits of snow – one inch in Berlin, two in Copenhagen, and three in London – seem remarkable since during November, December, and January, the continent was an advertisement for mildness. After Christmas carols at London's St. James Cathedral a few days before the holiday, patrons left to eat dinner outside. Berlin was bucolic. The ski industry was slightly panicked by the lack of snow.


Floods threaten Queensland town's levees

Thousands of residents of the rural Queensland town of St George are waiting anxiously to see if the town's levees will hold up to a record flood. About 3,000 of the town's residents left on Sunday after a mandatory evacuation order was issued in the biggest operation of its kind in Queensland's history.

On Monday, emergency crews scrambled to complete a 2.5-mile (4km) dirt levee around the town, 300 miles west of Brisbane. It is thought the levee will hold water from the rising Balonne river up to 14.7 metres. [guardian]

Leap Day Tornado Outbreak 2012 is rare and deadly

Severe storms that hammered the Ohio and Tennessee valleys Wednesday were pushing into the southern Appalachians and part of the South this evening, continuing the threat of devastating tornadoes.

Currently severe storms are stretching from northern Louisiana, central Mississippi, central/western Tennessee, Kentucky and southern Ohio to West Virginia. In addition to the elevated risk of damaging wind gusts, large hail and tornadoes, flash flooding will be a problem as the storms enter the Appalachians, before weakening somewhat.

According to AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Henry Margusity, one supercell thunderstorm with a history of producing tornadoes moved through Kentucky, for approximately 250 miles, over the course of four hours.

The destructive storms are moving on after slamming the eastern Plains and Mississippi Valley Tuesday night. Deadly tornadoes touched down in Branson, Mo., and Harrisburg, Ill., two of the hardest-hit communities.

A state of emergency has been declared by Governor Nixon in Missouri following the dangerous storms and tornadoes that tore through the state into the early morning hours.

Chris McCloud, a spokesperson for the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, told AccuWeather.com that they can only confirm 6 deaths in the Harrisburg, Ill., tornado.

Leap Day Tornadoes

Since most weather records began about the turn of the last century, there have been about 29 leap days, give or take depending on the record.

That’s only 29 days of record keeping. That’s just a long February, really.

What’s even less than that is the number of leap days since good tornado records began in 1950. That data would include the previous Leap Day Outbreak of 1952, when eight tornadoes hit Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia.

Now, it’s probably fair to say we have a new Leap Day Outbreak: Feb. 29, 2012.

It’s just preliminary data right now, but there have been 14 reports of possible tornadoes since midnight. And looking at how the atmosphere is shaping up for the rest of today, it will likely be extremely violent in the Tennessee and Kentucky area.

Tornado warnings have been ongoing most of the day there. And this is after tornadoes have already killed at least 9 today, as of 2 p.m.

Branson, Mo., was hit hard early this morning. Illinois is where most of the fatalities have occurred.

That gigantic low pressure system spinning in Iowa right now is at least partially to blame for the storms in the south and blizzard conditions in the north. Lots of people are being affected. So, if you know anyone in those areas, give them a call and tell them to keep an eye to the sky.

But what about this historic day we only see every four years? Here are the tornadoes from every Leap Day since 1950:

As far as sheer numbers go, this outbreak is already bigger. Deaths this year are also higher than all of the other Leap Day tornadoes in the past 60 years.

What about our Leap Day records? The record high and low was 82 in 1972 and 15 in 1960. Those aren’t that odd for this time of year, actually. The record low is a little warmer than the rest of the monthly records, but it’s not crazy.

The record rainfall is significantly lower than the other records for the month, however. The record is 0.31 inches, from 2004. I mean, we had 0.25 yesterday; not far off. But, when you only have 29 days to make those records, rather than a rich, 120-year history, you won’t have those same extremes.

Why So Many Tornadoes Are Striking the US

A warm spell and a low-dipping jet stream are fueling the monster storms that are spawning tornadoes across a wide swath of the country, weather experts said Friday.

The Storm Prediction Center received 311 reports of severe weather Friday, including 48 reported tornadoes and a few reported fatalities. This massive storm system also spawned deadly tornadoes on Leap Day, which raked Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee. The severe storms killed at least 12 people and included a strong EF-4 twister in Harrisburg, Ill., a rarity for February.

As of Friday morning, the severe storm risk area covered an estimated 162 million people, or 56 percent of the United States, according to weather experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).


Storms wreck Indiana towns, kill 28 in 3 states

Powerful storms leveled small towns in southern Indiana, transforming entire blocks of homes into piles of debris, tossing school buses into a home and a restaurant and causing destruction so severe it was difficult to tell what was once there. As night fell, dazed residents shuffled through town, some looking for relatives, while rescue workers searched the rubble for survivors. Without power, the only light in town came from cars that crawled down the streets.
From the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes, the storms touched nearly all walks of life. A fire station was flattened. Roofs were ripped off schools. A prison fence was knocked down and scores of homes and businesses were destroyed. At least 28 people were killed, including 14 in Indiana and 12 in Kentucky, and dozens of others were hurt in the second deadly tornado outbreak this week.

10 Weirdest Things About March 2012 Weather

To say March 2012 has been weird...strange...bizarre weatherwise has been, frankly, a massive understatement.

Kicking it off with a destructive tornado outbreak on March 2nd, the pattern then turned sharply to produce, among other things, record-smashing warmth in the Midwest and parts of the Northeast, in particular. We've counted down the 10 weirdest things we've witnessed about this March weather. let's start...with an odd late snow event. [weather.com]


No. 10: Heaviest late-season snow
What's so strange about snow in the Pacific Northwest? Aren't the Cascades prone to snowstorms measured in feet?

Yes. However, on March 20-21, as we officially ushered in spring, Eugene, Ore. was blanketed in 6-10" of snow. Officially at the Eugene Airport (elevation ~ 365 ft. MSL), 7.5" of snow was measured, the heaviest snowstorm for so late in the season with records dating to 1892. It was also the heaviest snowstorm this late in the season in Oregon's capital, Salem (2.5").


Incidentally...Eugene's average annual snow is only 2.8". This storm dumped 2-3 times that amount....in March!



No. 9: A Massive, Rapid Snowmelt
On March 4, Marquette, Mich. had 47" of snow on the ground. The first 5 days of March featured over 2 feet of snow. Sounds like a typical, frustrating March in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, right?

Shortly thereafter came a thaw for the record books. By the morning of March 19, that entire snowcover was gone; 47" melted in 15 days! You can see the rapid retreat of snowcover in the first 17 days of March in the animation above. On March 21, the high reached 81 degrees, a new March all-time record! In fact, the old March record high of 71 degrees was topped a total of 5 straight days from March 17-21!

A similar rapid snowmelt occurred in Caribou, Maine. From Mar. 15-23, a 26" snowpack melted away, as the city set its earliest 60+ high (Mar. 18), 70+ high (Mar. 20) and all-time March record (75 on Mar. 21)!

As Meteorologist Adam Dean quipped, "If you were getting a little warm in Caribou, you could still go outside and start a snowball fight," while some crusty snowpiles were still on the ground. Skiers were seen in shorts and bikinis March 21 at Sunday River, Maine. Welcome to spring!

No. 7: All-Time March Heat ... Several Days in a Row!
Setting a record high temperature for the calendar day is one thing. Then, you can set a record high for the entire month. Much more impressive. Well...how about setting a monthly record high, several days in a row? In a word...unreal!

Traverse City and Pellston, Mich. tied or broke their all-time record high 5 days in a row from Mar. 17-21!
The following cities tied or set a new March record high 3 days in a row: Detroit, Columbus, Cleveland and Houlton, Maine. While not on consecutive days, the 3 warmest March days on record were also recorded in Caribou, Maine and Lansing, Mich.

In fact, there was very nearly an unheard of 90-degree March high in Michigan on Mar. 22 (Ypsilanti topped out at 89 degrees).

We'll come back to daily record high streaks later.


No. 6: Atlanta Pollen Count Tops 9,000
In the early spring, when trees are blooming, any prolonged warm spell without rain can spell misery for allergy sufferers.

A stretch from Mar. 16-22 was particularly difficult for those sneezing in the Atlanta metro. Pollen counts of 8,164 on Mar. 19, followed by a count of 9,369 on Mar. 20 were measured by the Atlanta Allergy and Asthma Clinic (AAAC) on Mar. 20. This shattered the previous record of 6,013 set on April 12, 1999.

What do these numbers mean? According to the AAAC, tree pollen counts of at least 90 are considered "high" and counts at least 1500 are classified as "extreme". These counts in Atlanta peaked at over 6 times the "extreme" criteria threshold!

This is one time of the year when folks may pine for rain despite seemingly pleasant temperatures in the 70s and 80s, just to wash the pollen out of the air.


No. 5: Michigan, Minnesota Tornadoes ... in March
Tornadoes are certainly no strangers to the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest. As early as mid-March? Well...that's a much different story.

It all started on March 12, with an EF1 tornado in Midland County, Mich. near the town of Coleman. In the era of modern tornado recordkeeping (since 1950), this was the first confirmed tornado north of Interstate 96 in Lower Michigan before March 20.

Just 3 days later, an EF3 tornado destroyed homes near Dexter, Mich. This was the earliest-in-season tornado rated F/EF3 or stronger in the state of Michigan (again dating to 1950). This was also the first tornado of such intensity in Washtenaw County anytime before June!

It doesn't end there. An EF0 tornado near Elysian, Minn. on Mar. 19 was not only the second earliest Minnesota tornado on record, according to the Minnesota State Climatologist, but it was also the farthest north so early in the season in the state.


No. 4: Record Hailstone...in "Paradise"
Any guesses on where the hailstone above was found? Texas? Oklahoma? Alabama? Nope, nope, and nope! Try Hawaii!

On March 9, a supercell thunderstorm crawled slowly east on the island of Oahu, dumping numerous 2 to 3 inch-plus diameter hailstones. The hailstone you see above, measuring 4.25" in length, 2" wide and 2.25" tall, was a record-smashing hailstone for Hawaii. This hailstone's length is roughly comparable to the diameter of a softball, which is known to punch holes in roofs!

The previous record hailstone size: only 1" diameter (roughly the size of a quarter). According to the Western Regional Climate Center's "Climate of Hawaii" writeup, thunderstorms are reported somewhere in Hawaii about 20-30 days each year. The report goes on to say thunderstorms are, "infrequent enough so that many people who have lived only in Hawaii have no real notion of the violence of mainland thunderstorms."


No. 3: Chicago Record Streak
Now let's come back to talking about daily record high temperatures.

It's one thing to break a daily record high, in other words, to record the highest temperature on record for the calendar date. Even the longer periods of record for conventional stations date back only to the late 19th century, so you only have to be the warmest such day of a total of, say, 130 or 140 such days.

Now try doing that for 9 straight days....in a changeable month of March, when brief warm spells are usually interrupted quickly and abruptly by a sharp cold front. Such was the case in Chicago from March 14-22.

Not only that, but the "Windy City" set a record for most 80-degree days in March (7), including an off-the-charts 5 straight 80-degree days! Only one April day has had more highs in the 80s (April 1977) than this March!

Ft. Wayne, Ind. also tied or shattered daily record highs for 9 straight days in that same time period (Mar. 14-22). The previous longest streak of daily record highs there was a 7-day streak from July 8-14, 1936. Yes, that was during the "Dust Bowl!"


No. 2: International Falls: The Melting Icebox
International Falls, Minn. has proclaimed itself the "Icebox of the Nation". However, the warmth of early March 2012 left people wondering if the refrigerator door had been left open or if it lost power.

Remember our discussion on the previous slide about daily record high streaks in Chicago and Ft. Wayne? Well...the "Icebox" has them beat! "I-Falls" tied or set new daily record highs over a 12 of 13 day-stretch from March 10-22, 2012. An almost two-week stretch of record warmth...along the Canadian border....in March!

This included an all-time March record of 77 on Mar. 17, which only lasted 1 day, as it was broken again on Mar. 18 (79 degrees). March 16 was the earliest-in-season 70s there, obliterating the previous record earliest date by two weeks! By the way, average high temperatures from Mar. 10-22 range from 32-38 degrees! So, in the extreme, these highs were over 40 degrees above the day's average high!

(Side note: Grand Rapids, Mich. set an all-time record March 21 with a daytime high that was 40 degrees above the day's average high. This record had stood since Jan. 22, 1894!)

Perhaps most odd was a daily "low" temperature of 60 degrees on March 19. This was equal to the day's record high for Mar. 19, before that record fell by the wayside (78 degrees in the afternoon).

We wondered if some turned on the A/C in the "icebox" during this stretch.


No. 1: Thousands of Daily Record Highs!
The image you see above shows temperature departures from average (in deg. Celsius...or Kelvin) over the U.S. from March 1-19, 2012, courtesy of NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Prediction and the National Center for Atmospheric Research. The deeper red colors show where temperatures were the most anomalously warm. Blue shadings show anomalously cool areas for that period.

According to NOAA's National Climatic Data Center, there have been over 6,000 daily record highs tied or broken from Mar. 1-22! Compare that to the number of daily record lows (roughly 250), and the ratio comes down to rougly 24 daily record highs for each record low!

Given temperature forecasts for the rest of the country over the next week or so, it is possible March 2012 may go down as the warmest on record for the Lower 48 States! March 1910 is the current standard-bearer.
