Rainbow

Rainbow comes in 7 colors (ROYGBIV -red, orange, yellow, green , blue, indigo, violet). I believe the reason why God used the rainbow as a remembrance not to flood the whole world again because the 7 colors remind God of the 7 days in which he took to create the earth and all that is in it. Besides, rainbow almost always occur after the rain.

Genesis 9:12 And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth."

The other reason could be that he created all the land animals including humans on the 6th day before he rested on the 7th day. The land animals and humans were the ones that God totally destroyed during the Great Flood. The 6th day was also the day he blessed all living creatures and humans before He rested on the 7th:

Genesis 1:24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, [b] and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

27 So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food." And it was so.

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

All the 7 Rainbow colors representing each day of creation and when combined produce white color. It is a known fact that shining white light through a prism produces the rainbow colors. White signifies purity and goodness. No wonder on the 6th day, God declared that everything he has created during the 6 days of creation as very good and blessed it on the 7th day.

Genesia1:31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

Genesis2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested [a] from all his work. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

This is very pleasing! The rainbow has long been associated with "seven colors." And the account of the Flood is told in terms of a New Creation, because there are many correspondences between Adam and Noah as well as between Genesis 1 (beginnings) and 8 (new beginnings).

The Creation event is marked by the Number 7. It is interesting to find the rainbow as the token of the "New Creation" since the rainbow is costumarily linked to the Number 7 too.

Thanks Victor for your insight; you have said rightly.

Note also that Genesis 8 (new beginnings) - Genesis 1 (beginnings) = 7. And there were 8 people that survived the Great Flood. The number 7 is also associated with the Book of Revelation i.e. the 7 bowls, the 7 trumpets, the 7 plagues, the 7 thunders, the 7 lampstands, the 7 angels etc.

Curiously, the rainbow is also mentioned again in Revelation 10:
1Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars. Is this rainbow a reminder of the 7 days of God's creation, a reminder that He will not destroy life on earth again with a great Flood but by other means? Curiously, the rainbow at the New Creation i.e the new beginnings after the great Flood started in Genesis, the first book of the Bible and ends with another rainbow in Revelation, the last book of the Bible. Another new beginning coming?....The word "rainbow" is found only in the book of Genesis, Ezekiel and Revelation in the Bible.

The 7 colors of the rainbow reminds God of the covenant between Noah and God that He will not destroy life again on earth with a great Flood and each color of the raibow reminds all about the 7 days of creation. I am not sure of the significance of the colors; perhaps some great minds may provide some more insights:

Red - Day 1 of creation
Orange - Day 2 of creation
Yellow - Day 3 of creation
Green - Day 4 of creation
Blue - Day 5 of creation
Indigo - Day 6 of creation
Violet - Day 7 of creation

I think you have left out a most important part of your analysis...

These are man-made color distinctions. What about peach, tangerine, aquamarine, teal, and purple. Those colors exist in the rainbow too. I would be curious as to where you would find "biblical" proof for your ROYGBIV doctrine...sorry to burst the bubble...

The 7 rainbow colors of ROY G BIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) are acceptable colors of the rainbow in the academic field. The colors that you mentioned "peach, tangerine, aquamarine, teal, and purple" are not known to be acceptable colors of the rainbow. Do you see different colors in the rainbow? BTW, rainbow color is an interesting phenomena; all colors in the rainbow combined form white color which represents in the religious sense, purity and holiness and goodness. Purity, holiness and goodness are what you find in God and this is represented by white color which is composed of the all the colors of the rainbow. The colors that you mentioned "peach, tangerine, aquamarine, teal, and purple" does not form white color.

Ever wonder why God chose Rainbow as a sign of covenant between Noah and God that He will never destroy life on earth again with a Flood? Why not God chose thunder or lightning which also occurred during the rain? The main reason I believe is that rainbow have seven colors to remind all the 7 days of creation and it is certainly beautiful to look at; same as the world he has created.

Indeed, the colors in the rainbow form a continuum. The are no "color bands" in it. But what is interesting is that, in the development of human history, men ended up traditionally associating the color spectrum with the "seven colors."

Thus the link takes place between the Bible (rainbow as new beginning) and tradition (the seven archetypical colors). The original writer most likely didn't explicitly meant to associate the colors of the rainbow with the seven days of Creation, but Scripture is infinitely powerful and it often ends up connecting to themes and images that will be formed later on.

So it is not a "doctrine" per se but an interesting unexpected link that adds beauty to the biblical narrative of the new beginning after the Flood.

Now I am beginning to see the connection between Rainbow with the Number 7 and the Number 8. That's truly amazing.

Yes, you are right, the topic on rainbow comes as an unexpected link and a surprise as I meditate on the Flood and the covenant between God and Noah. I was asking myself why did God used Rainbow as a sign of the covenant between Him and Noah; why not used thunder, lightning, rain or clouds as a sign? What so special about the Rainbow?.. or is there a hidden meaning or a hidden connection that God want us to discover? I then realized that the 7 colors of the rainbow may have a connection with the 7 days of God's creation and perhaps more.....
