spirit into the wilderness,,tempt,,Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word,,devil + forty days,,afterward,,hung + answer,,It is written,,him up into,,high mountain + If thou be the Son of God, command,,stone,,made bread
    Matthew 4
1 Then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
    8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
    12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
    15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
    Luke 4
1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:
10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:
11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?
23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.
24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.
    25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.
27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.
28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,
29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.
30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way,
31 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.
32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,
34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.
35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.
36 And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.
37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.
38 And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.
39 And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.
40 Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.
41 And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.
42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.
43 And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.
44 And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

The preaching of the Gospel and the Number 4

I also think that there is a connection to "city" in Matthew 4 and Luke 4, but the primary links seems to be with the Gospel and the Four Directions.

The first appearance of the word Gospel in the Bible is in Matthew 4! The first appearance in Luke is in Chapter 4. And we know that "Gospel" is linked to the Number 4 because we have Four Gospels and the message of the Gospel is the message of the Fourfold Cross.

Gospel means "good news" and it goes forth in Isaiah 40, Psalm 40 and Book 40, Matthew. There is obviously a "fourness" in the Number 40...

Similarly, there is a link to the Four Directions (which is also implied in the symbol of the Cross). Four denotes Expansion, and we find that the preaching of the Gospel initiated by Jesus in the Chapters 4 quickly expands ands spreads to all directions. This links to the archetype of the four directions - "there went out a fame of him through all the region round about."

This links also to the fourth Hebrew Letter. The Dalet alphabetic verses in Scripture often mention the KeyWord Derek, which means Way, Direction.

The names of the four directions - north, east, west and south - coincidentally form the acronym NEWS and this is an interesting phenomenon that reminds of the Gospel and its spreading throughout the earth.

A long time ago I noticed a link between the concept of the four directions and the words of Christ in Matthew 26:
Mat 26:13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.
This is the last mention of (preach*, gospel) in Matthew. It is on Spoke 4 of its Inner Cycle. The first is in Matthew 4!

If we search for (preach*, Gospel) in the Gospels we find that it first occurs in Matthew 4, Mark 1:14 and Luke 4! Although 1:14 is not directly linked to 4, the Number 114 is a Spoke 4 number!

Going back to the Number 40, it is good to point out that the four Gospels are indexed in the forties:

    Matthew - Book 40
    Mark - Book 41
    Luke - Book 42
    John - Book 43

And when we come to Acts, the Gospel spreads, not only through the land of Christ, but to the "uttermost part of the earth". And Acts is Book 44!!

Spoke 4: Galatians - Preaching the Gospel

Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first. - Galatians 4:13

If we search the Epistles for (preach*, Gospel), we'll find that the hits are concentrated on the first four books -- Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians and Galatians. The number dramatically goes down after these.

The first three Epistles have five verses that mention the preaching of the Gospel. And the fourth has six. Galatians, the Fourth Epistle, is the one with the greatest number of hits. Considering that it is smaller than the first three, Galatians on Spoke 4 of the Bible Wheel display the greatest density of references to the preaching of the Gospel!

This is a strong link between the theme of the preaching of the Gospel and the Number 4! Let us preach the Fourfold Gospel!

Spoke 4: "Gospel preached" in the Inner Cycles

In Hebrews, there is only one appearance of the set (preach*, Gospel) and it is in Chapter 4!!
Hebrews 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
The phrase "gospel preached" appears only once more in the Epistles: in 1 Peter 4!
1 Peter 4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
It is particularly interesting the peculiar reference to preaching the Gospel "to them that are dead," for Death is a theme also found on Spoke 4.

Interesting! Acts is book 44. Come to think of it Damascus adds up to 444 in Hebrew. Any observation on that?

    Damascus: 44 and 444

Hey, that was a good find! I think you know that there is something into this.

First, I'd point out that the word Dam (blood) adds up to 44 and it appears transliterated in Acts 1 in the word Aceldama.

Damascus comes from the same D-M root and adds up to 444. But the very word Damascus is maximized in Book 44! This city is famous because of the episode on the "road to Damascus" that led to Paul's conversion. This is an interesting link between 44 and 444.

amazing. Yes Damascus is most probably used more in acts than elsewhere in the bible.
