Random Road Trip Day 11 – The Oregon Country Fair!

This was one of the “non-random” parts of my road trip. I planned the trip so I could spend a day at the Oregon Country Fair on July 9th before attending a surprise birthday party for my brother-in-law in Lacey, Wa on July 10th. I can say this because I am writing this post after [...]

Random Road Trip Day 10 – Profound Natural Beauty of the Coastal Trail

I awoke early this morning and had my coffee and wi-fi at the Beachcombers Organic Coffee House in Trinidad. Then I hit the road, since I need to make about 3oo miles today. I stopped near Orick and hiked five miles along the Skunk Cabbage section of the Coastal Trail. Here is the sign at [...]

Random Road Trip Day 9 – Exploring Trinidad, CA

Slept in my van on a side street in Eureka, CA. Drove up Highway 101 to the next town for breakfast in Arcata. Then spent the day exploring Trinidad. They have a little organic coffee house that also serves up free wi-fi so I helped myself to both. There is a beautiful path up to [...]

Random Road Trip Day 8 – The Magnificent Redwoods!

I left San Francisco and headed north on Highway 101 and then traveled the parallel “Avenue of the Giants” which has many places to stop and wander through the groves of Redwoods. One is [...]

My brother-in-law Rich Comstock showed me around San Francisco today. We walked to Grace Cathedral which has fancy doors engraved with scenes from the Bible: And here’s Rich standing near the corner of the Cathedral:

Random Road Trip Day 5 – Area 101 and San Francisco!

About ten miles north of Laytonville on Highway 101, there is a wonderful little campground where folks like to hang out in the Redwood forest. They call it “Area 101″: They’re a bunch of hip artists and musicians:

Random Road Trip Day 4 – Clouds, Sun, & Excellent 30 Mile Ride

My first stop today was in Florence, Oregon where I found a nice breakfast cafe next door to the Lighthouse Motel which let me share their unsecured wi-fi network. The rain stopped, but the sky was still overcast and the temperature a very cool 58F. I felt energetic, so I hopped on my bike and [...]

Random Road Trip Day 3 – Ride, Rain, and Sea

Started the day in Hood River. Took the exit at the Bonneville Dam and found a section of the historical highway 30 had been converted a bike trail, so I stopped and rode a few miles: The bike trail ends at the Eagle Creek trail head:
